These past four weeks have honestly been so much fun. Many new memories were made, friendships grew stronger, and experiences grew wider. I am so thankful that I got the chance to work with not only some of my amazing friends but with my mentor Caroline. She has taught me so much over these past four weeks and has given me so much wisdom to carry with me throughout the rest of my life. Caroline is definitely someone who I would consider a role model. She helped me not worry too much about the future and to always try to do what makes you happy. I honestly didn't think her and I would connect as well as we did. Caroline is definitely an inspiration to me. I am also grateful for getting the chance to work with two of my friends Jade and Sarah for multiple reasons. They both made work more exciting than it already was and our friendship definitely got so much stronger over these past couple weeks. Externship was full of laughter. I was honestly going through a lot during externship but they helped bring me up and forget about all I was dealing with. When I came into work a mess, they helped piece me back together and motivated me to work hard. They both mean so much to me and after externing with them, my love for them just grew stronger making it harder for me to want to say goodbye to them after summer. How has this experience (the externship) made you consider your college or career path? In other words: Is your experience something you would like to continue exploring or has this experience turned you off from pursuing this field of study or career path..? The style of thi
A skill I acquired in high school that has been helping me during this internship is working with what what is given to me. The project I am currently working on is a paint shelf for all my mentors paint bottles and the materials that were given to me, Jade, and Sarah was cardboard, a hot glue gun, pencils, a ruler, and glue sticks. At first we weren't really sure how we were going to make a organized shelf for over a hundred paint bottles but thanks to High Tech High International, we managed to come up with a plan and start making it. Another skill that I have obtained from High Tech is being able to present/go up to strangers and talking to them. Claytime Ceramics is a small business in Ocean Beach that allows the public to come in to take a pottery class, paint ceramics, make mozaik pieces, and take painting classes. Since our mentor is the only one working at her business, there are times when she needs to leave her store for a little to pick up her son or to run an errand so while she is away, we would have to watch the store. Well while watching the store, we should have costumers come in and we would have to talk them about what the store has to offer, set them up to start working on whatever project they wanted to do or talk to a class about the project they are about to start. Because of High Tech, I had the courage to go up to them and somewhat present in front of strangers on a daily basis. I feel like this shelf that I am working on is similar to most hands on projects we have created in the past at High Tech because most of the time, we have to work with what is given to us. Especially in our junior year when we took an engineering class where we were building shelfs and stools, we had to work with what was given to us.
In this blog post, click on the video below to see what I am currently working on at Claytime Ceramics During my first week of externship, I noticed something I really had trouble with was coming into work on time. The first two days I was there on time because I would get to Ocean Beach extra early. On the third day, I decided to take advantage of how late I start (1 pm) by sleeping in and leaving my house later than I would leave my house and for the rest of that week and some of week two, I have been having trouble waking up on time to head to work. After talking to my co-workers about this issue, they helped me come up with a solution that would help me sleep in without coming in late. Today was the first day of me trying this new idea and so far great. I wake up no later than 12 pm so I have about 15-20 minutes to get ready and then head to work no later than 12;30 and even then that's kind of pushing it. During the first week, it would take me awhile to get ready in the morning because I would shower and then do my makeup. Now I shower at night and go to work with a bare face and I'm making it on time.
. Below is a audio clip of an interview Jade, Sarah, and I did with our mentor Caroline. She asked to not be filmed which is why we just took an audio of the interview.
For my senior Externship, I decided to intern at Claytime Ceramics in Ocean Beach with two of my friends. Coming into this, I was really nervous because I wasn't sure what to expect. I didn't know if we were going to being doing pottery for our mentor, teaching classes or anything at all. I was super nervous about meeting our mentor at first and just working there. I was scared that I was going to break something on the first day but thank god I didn't. On the first day, I already started learning. As soon as we walked in, she taught us the process of how the pottery is made, painted, and then sealed. After walking us through the process, she let us try it for ourselves and it was way more difficult than I thought but I definitely had fun and learned a lot while doing it. Below are pictures from the first three days of Externship: On the first day, it was a little introduction to what we were looking forward to doing. We did do some hands on work but it wasn't like an actual independent task she would normally give us; more of a "try this" kind of thing if that makes sense. On the second day is when were given our first small project. She asked us to go through her paint bottles, throw away the empty/dried out one and with the leftovers, paint the caps with the colors they are. In the first picture you can see Jade painting a red bottle's cap and the third picture is us going through the paints. On Wednesday, she asked us to make her a little cardboard shelf to organize her paints which is still in the process and also a sign to advertise fathers day. In the video you can see the process of both of those things coming a long. Throughout the time of us at internship, we all switched jobs around.
