Blog Post #5: First Week Reflection
This first week of internship has been great! I love Interning here at the Living Coast Discovery Center and I have learned a lot while being here. I met a lot of new people and made a new friend. A lot has surprised me but the one that surprised me the most was how much the staff cares for the animals. Of course I knew they would care for them but while shadowing a lot of different volunteers ans staff members, I noticed how happy they all looked caring for them and how much they genuinely cared for every animal they were feeding. Its hard to explain but honestly, it made me happy seeing them care for the animals. Another thing that surprised me was how how much work I would be doing everyday and how many animals I get to care for. On my first day, I knew I would be feeding animals but I was thinking they would only trust me with some basic easy fish but i'm not only caring for those, I feed the sea turtles, sharks, sting rays, some baby sharks, a chameleon and much more. Since I am a high school intern, I didn't think they would trust me with all these really cool animals considering how a lot of adults think of teenagers; lazy, not responsible, etc. I'll admit that this does apply to some but not a lot and to see that they trust me like High Tech trusts its students, makes me really happy. Everyday, I wake up excited to go to work to take care of these animals and honestly, a part of me I thought I would read waking up early to go care for them. I am excited to continue to care for all these different animals and I am also excited to make some more memories.
Below is a video I took of one of the animals I care for being hand fed
